Despite Dismissal Of Case Against Kuy Residents, Land Encroachment Persists

Preah Vihear Provincial Court dismissed a legal case against four Kuy indigenous residents of M’lou Prey II commune, Chheb district in April this year, rendering it “null and void” and “not necessary” due to lack of compelling evidence. However, problems have cropped up with outsiders trying to assert authority on the land again.

‘Return Our Sacred Mountain’ – Punong Natives in Mondulkiri Continue Four-Year Fight For Land Sold Illegally

Radang is a sacred mountain located within the Punong indigenous community land in Pou Lung village in Senmonorom district’s Romnea commune in Mondulkiri province. The villagers have always celebrated the mountain by making offerings to the spirits, an activity that has long prevailed.

Two sellers meet on the former site of Chhnok Trou village on the Tonle Sap, where villagers were evicted in 2018. Many have returned to the area to maintain their livelihoods.

Beneath the waters of the Tonle Sap lies a little girl. Her name was Dang Thy, and even as she was bleeding to death from the bullet in her waist, she asked about the health of her mother, who was also dying from gunshot wounds following an attack by Khmer Rouge militants in 1998.

Living in a small concrete house with his wife and two young children, one kilometer away from Takhmao Bridge, ex-Giant Ibis Transportation employee Or Chanthy, 45, contemplates life’s challenges. In 2020, Chanthy, a union member, was among 80 bus drivers who were made redundant without severance and seniority payment when the company suspended operations during the Covid-19 outbreak. Severance and seniority payments are compulsory under the Labor Law.

Kong Kong Provincial Court convicted 10 land activists Tuesday of incitement to commit serious social disorder and malicious denunciation, and sentenced them to one year in prison plus a total fine of 40 million riels to be paid to the plaintiff, tycoon Heng Huy.
