Prime Minister Hun Manet said he spoke by phone with the U.S President Donald Trump last night to discuss the developments along the Cambodia-Thailand border following the latest deadly violence involving Thai troops in Prey Chan village in Banteay Meanchey province.

He said he thanked Trump for his initiative which contributed to the establishment of a ceasefire between Cambodia-Thailand and reiterated Cambodia’s firm commitment to upholding the spirit of the Joint Declaration signed in Kuala Lumpur last month.

On Friday, he also spoke by phone with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to discuss efforts to maintain a peaceful resolution, sharing that Cambodia remains committed to using channels set up under the extended truce to address border issues. Malaysia, the current chair of ASEAN, has played a central role in ceasefire efforts alongside Trump.

Hun Manet said that Trump emphasized his clear position to “see lasting peace” between Cambodia and Thailand. The president will continue to closely monitor the issue to ensure that no armed clashes recur along the border of two countries.

A peace agreement was signed by Cambodia and Thailand late last month during a bloc summit intended to end a border dispute that erupted into open conflict in July, killing dozens and displacing hundreds or thousands on both sides. Thailand has since suspended the agreement.

As tensions flared once again between the neighbors, communities are feeling the pressure, with more than 500 Cambodian families evacuated from the disputed Prey Chan village since Thursday, as one civilian was killed and three others wounded.
