Some 1,000 workers of Chinese-owned Y&W Garment in Phnom Penh continue to block the road in protest, demanding that the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training pay “repair of damage” on top of compensation, seeing that the owner ran away.

More than 2,000 workers of R.G Footwear in Kandal province are worried about losing their jobs after the factory they worked in was destroyed by fire on Tuesday. They hope that the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training will find a solution so that they have a job regardless of the factory’s continuity.

Residents of Ampov Prey community in Kandork commune, Kandal Stung district, once again protested against the work carried out by the new $1.5 billion Phnom Penh International Airport company on Tuesday. At the site, workers were attempting to erect pillars to build a fence after they filled the so-called 94 canal earlier this year. Some of the soil also ended up inside people’s houses.

About 40 Boeung Tamok community residents marched from the night market to the Royal Palace to petition the King to intervene in the Boeung Tamok development, which has affected their homes and livelihoods. 

Royal Gendarmerie Arrests 11 Pursat Residents in Wildlife Crime Crackdown

Cambodia’s Royal Gendarmerie arrested 11 Pursat province residents Tuesday after the military force deployed nearly 300 of its officers to crack down on natural resource crimes. Officers confiscated 11 makeshift huts, nine motorbikes, one electrofishing device, 23 pieces of cut wood, 10 chainsaws and seven plant seedlings, according to a Thursday Royal Gendarmerie Facebook post.

European Union and Cambodia Launch $53 Million Technical Education Initiative

On Tuesday the European Union and the Cambodian government launched four new programs designed to promote sustainability and energy efficiency in the country, including a $53.1 million initiative to improve technical education. This education initiative, part of the EU’s larger Global Gateway strategy, focuses on providing young Cambodians with the necessary technical skills for careers in green and digital fields.
