Nine people who were charged by the Kandal provincial court after protesting during an ongoing land dispute over a new airport in Kandal were released on bail on Monday evening. They face as much as five years behind bars if found guilty.

Kampong Chhnang Provincial Court on Wednesday questioned four land activists over a complaint of attempted murder and intentional damage after the group allegedly used knives to damage fishing nets in Kampong Tralach district’s Taches commune when the plaintiff went fishing in a part of the lake they considered to be a protected site. The activists maintain part of the lake, Boeng Pur, is a protected site, though local authorities disagree.

At least two people affected by a new airport project in Kandal province were briefly detained for questioning by authorities on Wednesday after they visited their farmland, which is being cleared by airport developer OCIC. The arrest was made just a day after authorities blocked the road leading to the new Phnom Penh airport project in Kandal province on Tuesday.
