Garment Workers Request for Water Mist Fans as Rising Temperatures Affect Health And Productivity

Garment workers in Phnom Penh and Kandal, Takeo and Kampong Chhnang provinces have asked their companies to install water mist fans in the factory amid rising temperatures. The call comes on the heels of the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training’s directive on April 9 to factories and companies to spray water on roofs and set up enough fans to cool down.

Government Announces Financial Support for Suspended Workers as Garment Sector Struggles Under Global Economic Blows

Since November, factory worker Ouk Tharith, 40, has been relying on $30 a month from Great Union (Cambodia) Garment Co., Ltd in Phnom. Lacking sufficient orders, the factory has suspended operations three times in recent months, impacting some 1,072 workers. Tharith has taken a job as a cleaner — work that pays just $170 a month compared with the $300 she earned as a garment worker.
