The lawyer for union leader Rong Chhun and two other activists filed an appeal on Wednesday against Phnom Penh Municipal Court’s conviction on incitement charges. In a separate case, the lawyer for jailed activists with the environmental NGO Mother Nature filed an appeal to the Supreme Court the same day the Appeal Court denied them bail.

Union leader Rong Chhun was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison on incitement charges on Wednesday for comments he made suggesting that a community along the Vietnam border had lost land during the frontier’s demarcation. Activists Sar Kanika and Ton Nimol were both sentenced to 20 months in prison on charges of incitement to cause social disorder for having publicly called for the imprisoned unionist’s release.
Cambodian migrant workers continue returning in large numbers, following the reopening of the Thai-Cambodian border late last week, with more than 1,400 returning to Banteay Meanchey alone on Sunday.
“We bought these helicopters for civil transportation, rescue work, medical work, not military purposes due to actual requirements, and the budget to buy these from the state,” he said.
