In a bid to cut back on deadly traffic incidents, a project is aiming to replace often-perilous truck transports for garment workers with buses and other safety interventions.

Garment workers have called on the government to intervene to ensure that rental house owners are not charging lodgers more than the fixed water price of 800 riel per cubic meter set four years ago, saying that they were struggling to keep up with the high cost of utilities.

Employers and government representatives have countered union requests to raise the minimum wage for garment workers, instead arguing for a wage decrease in the second of three September negotiation meetings to set the minimum for 2022.

As the first day of a three-way negotiation of the minimum wage for Cambodian garment workers, union and industry representatives have reached an early disagreement on the prospect of a wage increase for 2022.
