Nine people who were charged by the Kandal provincial court after protesting during an ongoing land dispute over a new airport in Kandal were released on bail on Monday evening. They face as much as five years behind bars if found guilty.

Nine villagers who were arrested on Sunday while protesting an ongoing land dispute over a new airport in Kandal were sent to pre-trial detention on Tuesday night, while 21 other detainees were released.

Family members of villagers arrested by police while protesting the clearance of their farmland to make way for a new airport in Kandal province are alleging that their relatives are being held hostage to pressure them into accepting the compensation offered for their land. Thirty people were arrested on Sunday ahead of what witnesses describe as widespread police raids, beatings and arrests.

At least two people affected by a new airport project in Kandal province were briefly detained for questioning by authorities on Wednesday after they visited their farmland, which is being cleared by airport developer OCIC. The arrest was made just a day after authorities blocked the road leading to the new Phnom Penh airport project in Kandal province on Tuesday.
