Residents living in Arey Ksat have been surprised to learn that a stretch of the Mekong is being filled in to pave the way for a 70-hectare satellite city developed by the Khun Sear Import Export Company, owned by the well-connected real estate tycoon Khun Sear.
The Ministry of Information has given local authorities the green light to take legal action against journalists that they deem are unprofessional or spreading false information that obstructs law enforcement.
The latest impasse came when more than 30 affected people met Tuesday with Kandal provincial Governor Kong Sophorn seeking a solution after one month of protest. Long Sopheak is one of those local villagers and a resident of Kampong Talong village in Kandal Stung district, which is part of where developers have planned to build the 2,600-hectare airport project about 25 kilometers from the capital.
Around 200 people affected by a mega-airport project in Kandal province have been protesting the damaging of their rice crop by developers by blocking the road to the project’s site in Kandal Stung since Friday.
