Despite government pledge, Kandal villagers still fear losing their land

More than 300 families in Kandal province’s Tuol Pich commune remain at risk of losing land they have farmed for decades despite a pledge from provincial authorities to resolve the dispute within the week. The pledge came after soldiers opened fire on a crowd of protesting villagers last Thursday, leaving an elderly man injured.

Family members of jailed activists call for release

More than 10 family members of jailed activists of the former Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) submitted a petition Friday to the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) asking for help in securing the release of their kin. They had previously submitted a petition to the U.S. embassy just last week.

NEC chairman steps down due health problem

Hang Puthea, spokesman for the NEC, confirmed the resignation saying that he has an unspecified medical issue for which he received surgery abroad. He sent his resignation to the National Assembly on Tuesday and it was approved Friday.
