Hun Sen reaffirms resolve to visit Myanmar despite mounting criticism

Prime Minister Hun Sen on Wednesday reaffirmed his intention to visit Myanmar to meet with the military junta that seized power in the February coup. Hun Sen also defended Cambodia’s upcoming ASEAN chairmanship, saying that China had no influence over his country’s position on the contested South China Sea.

Phnom Penh Municipal Court resumes trials of opposition party activists

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court today resumed the first of a series of trials involving 44 opposition party activists charged with plotting and incitement to cause social chaos in connection to the failed attempt by leading opposition figure Sam Rainsy to return to Cambodia from exile on November 9, 2019. The trials had been delayed for several months due to COVID-19.

Body of Prince Ranariddh returned to Cambodia

The body then was sent to the royal palace, where traditional Cambodian and Buddhist funeral ceremonies will be held. According to a statement released last Friday, the Cambodian government has also chosen Wednesday as the official day of mourning marking the prince’s death.

Hun Sen backs oldest son to be the next country’s leader

Prime Minister Hun Sen has publicly announced his support for his eldest son, Hun Manet, as his potential successor as prime minister. He claimed the announcement came in response to critics who have long accused him of paving the way for his son to take over as Cambodia’s next leader.

Kem Sokha’s message shows Rainsy-Sokha split after Candlelight Party congress

Former president of the outlawed opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) Kem Sokha has put distance between himself and exiled political figure Sam Rainsy, saying the two men “are not the same person”. Sokha pointed to the return of Rainsy’s former Candlelight Party as a sign of the political split between the two opposition leaders.
