The Thai army continued to open fire on Cambodian territories in Oddar Meanchey province with shelling into the Khnar Temple area starting about 4:40 a.m on December 11, according to the National Defense Ministry.

As of 6 p.m on December 10, civilian deaths rose to 10 and around 60 others sustaining injuries, most of them in critical condition, the Ministry of Interior said.

It added that renewed clashes between Cambodia and Thailand brought the total number of displaced people to over 57,000 families or about 190,000 people.

The displaced people from Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Pursat, and Koh Kong provinces have taken refuge in shelters across seven provinces.

According to the Education Ministry, 883 schools in six provinces have been closed yesterday, affecting 7,278 teachers and 208,959 students. Several schools in Mondul Seima district in Koh Kong province have also been shut.

UNESCO has voiced deep concern over the attacks, particularly around the Preah Vihear Temple, a site inscribed on the World Heritage List, and has urged immediate measures to safeguard the region’s cultural heritage in all its forms.

The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts on December 10 condemned the assault on the temple which was hit by artillery shells. It stated that the attacks by the Thai military have damaged parts of the temple and impacted the joint conservation and restoration efforts of Cambodia and India, as well as other infrastructure.
