Breaking: No Sounds of Shooting After Ceasefire Comes into Effect at Midnight Updated

UPDATES:

17:02: In the latest press briefing, National Defense Ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata said a visit for military attachés from various embassies to the border regions will be organized on Wednesday to show Cambodia’s willingness to ensure transparency and peace.

The purpose of the visit is to inspect specific locations and assess the actual situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border.

She said military attachés from ASEAN member states, and those from “powerful countries”, expressed their support for this initiative.

16:15: Malaysian Army commander-in-chief General Mohd Nizam led delegates to Phnom Penh to engage in diplomatic discussion with Cambodia and Thailand, according to a press release.

It said despite the ceasefire, several minor skirmishes were reported shortly after the ceasefire began at midnight.

The Malaysian army said in the regional commanders’ meeting, both sides reached a renewed decision to uphold the ceasefire agreement, prohibit attacks on civilians, and stop further reinforcement of troops and movement of military forces.

They agreed to facilitate the return of wounded and deceased personnel, establish a coordination team made up of four representatives from each side, and wait for decisions from the General Border Committee meeting on August 4.

14:05: Information Minister Neth Pheaktra called on social media users, MMO, and online media outlets to refrain from publishing unverified information about the conflict zones, where a ceasefire has been declared since 12:00 a.m on July 28, 2025. The information that is being circulated are “merely rumors” and not reliable.

Pheaktra said official information about the frontline comes only from the Ministry of National Defense, which provides updates based on truth and accuracy, and are duly verified. He added that spreading unverified information based on hearsay is wrong and irresponsible.

He urged citizens to be patient and wait for official information from government spokespersons, including those from the National Defense and Information Ministries to avoid confusion, panic or reaction due unverified information and rumors.

12:14 p.m: The Cambodian Ministry of National Defense has rejected the Royal Thai Army Ground Force spokesperson’s claim that a clash occurred. According to ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata, the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces strictly adhered to ceasefire orders, which took effect at midnight on July 28, 2025, in accordance with the pact agreed by Cambodia and Thailand.

Both countries’ regional militaries held meetings this morning, including Cambodia’s Regional Military 5, 4, and 3, to discuss and coordinate the full implementation of the ceasefire.

Cambodia has made a clear and firm commitment to respect and implement the terms of the Joint Ceasefire Declaration between Cambodian and Thai armed forces, which was reached on Monday in Malaysia.

Cambodia’s Regional 4 military commanders and Thai’s military commander Region 1 have agreed to a ceasefire during their meeting, Socheata said. They also agreed to stop the reinforcement of troops, and will connect and share information, and inform leaders if something happens.

Other regional military commanders have scheduled to meet, she said, noting that she has not received the information yet.

11:25 a.m: On Tuesday, Prime Minister Hun Manet paid respect to Major General Duong Samneang, Commander of Division 7 and Regiment 3, who was killed during a clash with the Thai military in Preah Vihear province on July 26.

According to National Defense Ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata, five soldiers died and 21 others were injured on Saturday during the border clash, while eight civilians died and 50 others injured.

As of Tuesday morning, the ministry has yet to release an update on the number of casualties.

9:15: a.m: Cambodia’s National Defense Ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata told a press briefing Tuesday morning that both regional militaries did not engage in combat after midnight, which follows the commitment of the leaders.

However, to ensure the ceasefire agreement is effective, both parties have to implement some conditions, including “no shooting”. Second, there should not be any mobilization or reinforcement of troops. Third, troops on both sides return to their same position as at 24:00 hours on July 28, 2025.

She said informal meetings between regional military commanders of regions 1 and 2 on the Thai side, Chanbori and Trat, and regions 3, 4 and 5 military commanders on the Cambodian side will be conducted.

The meeting between Region 5 from Cambodia with regional 1 Thai side at Kbal Spean started at 7:00 am.

Region 4 and 2 on the Thai side and region 4 on Cambodia’s side will meet at 10 a.m at O’Smach. At the same time, Cambodian’s region 3 military commander and Thai military commander at Chanbori and Trat province will conduct a Zoom meeting at 9 a.m.

Socheata said the next step is to ensure the implementation of the ceasefire agreement where top level leaders set up a monitoring mechanism if both sides agree to meet with military attache from other countries, led by the current ASEAN chair in order to restore the relationship of both countries.

A working group monitoring mechanism will be established to implement ceasefire activity. Malaysia will discuss with ASEAN members in an effort to observe the commitment to support peace.

In addition, the GBC meeting on August 4, 2025, will see both parties agreeing to continue the direct relations between prime ministers, foreign affairs ministers and defense ministers of both countries.

Malaysia, Cambodia and Thailand’s foreign and defense ministers have been instructed to set up the mechanism for implementing, verifying and reporting the ceasefire.

Provincial spokesperson of Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear provinces confirmed that sounds of artillery shelling and gunfire fell silent after midnight at areas where clashes occurred along the border with Thailand. It followed a ceasefire agreement reached on Monday afternoon between Cambodia and Thailand.

Deputy governor and spokesperson of Oddar Meanchey, Met Meas Pheakdey, said there was no gunfire after 12 a.m, expressing hope of better days ahead.

On Tuesday morning, Prime Minister Hun Manet posted that the easing of tensions at the front lines after the ceasefire began at 12 a.m is in accordance with the agreement between Cambodia and Thailand that was reached at the special meeting in Malaysia on Monday.

“Over the past few days, my main concern has been finding ways to resolve the fighting as quickly as possible, to save the lives of armed forces as well as civilians’ caught in the conflict. The sooner the violence ends, the sooner that displaced citizens can return to their homes, rebuild their lives, and resume their livelihoods.”

The ceasefire agreement was reached through an initiative by United States president Donald Trump, and China which was facilitated by current Asean chair Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur.

Both Cambodia and Thailand agreed to three points, comprising an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire” that was effective from July 28 midnight, an informal meeting of regional military commanders on July 29, followed by discussions with defense attachés, led by the ASEAN Chair.

Pursuant to that, a General Border Committee (GBC) meeting will take place on August 4, hosted by Cambodia.

Trump posted on Truth Social on Monday congratulating both parties for reaching a ceasefire, noting that his trade team will restart negotiations.

“By ending this war, we have saved thousands of lives. I have instructed my trade team to restart negotiations on trade,” he said.
