Banned opposition official arrested for alleged political activities

A former opposition official was arrested and charged over the weekend for violating the Supreme Court’s 2017 decision to dissolve the main opposition party and ban him and more than 100 others from any political activities - marking the first time someone has been officially charged for defying the order.

Former secretary of state jailed for human trafficking of Cambodian maids to Saudi Arabia

A former Social Affairs Ministry secretary of state and his nephew were sentenced to 15 years in prison for the illegal trafficking of two Cambodian maids to Saudi Arabia. Presiding Judge Koy Sao issued the sentences on Tuesday against Ahmad Yahya, the former secretary of state, and his nephew Ismael Pin Osman, 44, a former Transport Ministry official, under Article 11 of the Anti-Human Trafficking Law.

Rainsy summoned a second time over Sar Kheng complaint

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court has summoned former opposition leader Sam Rainsy to be questioned over his claim that Interior Minister Sar Kheng supported Prime Minister Hun Sen’s alleged plot to bomb a helicopter carrying the late National Police commissioner.

Kandal police chief faces disciplinary action over corruption allegations

Interior Minister Sar Kheng is poised to take disciplinary action against Kandal provincial police chief Eav Chamroeun over accusations of wide-ranging corruption, according to a letter seen by reporters. Major General Chamroeun was the target of a complaint signed by members of the provincial police force on April 19 alleging diverting election funds, appropriating cars seized from criminal suspects and taking bribes in return for promotions.

Nuon Chea appeal dropped after death

Khmer Rouge Brother No. 2 Nuon Chea’s appeal of his genocide conviction has been dropped after he died in hospital aged 93 on Sunday, his lawyer said. The Extraordinary Chambers in the Court of Cambodia held the press conference about Mr Chea’s passing away last night at Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital in Phnom Penh.
