Residents Near Angkor Wat Continue to Struggle with Apsara Restrictions

Map, a 35-year-old whose family has lived about 20 kilometers from Angkor Wat for generations, doesn’t want her two children to have to walk a dirt path to use the outdoor toilet behind their home. But authorities told her family they will remove the half-meter wide cement path that Map’s family recently built, saying they did not have permission to build it.

APSARA Brings Lawsuit Against Angkor Wat Villagers For Obstructing Illegal Structure Demolition

A lawsuit has been filed by APSARA National Authority against seven villagers, including a commune police chief, who live around Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for allegedly inciting and obstructing public work in August.

Two sellers meet on the former site of Chhnok Trou village on the Tonle Sap, where villagers were evicted in 2018. Many have returned to the area to maintain their livelihoods.

Beneath the waters of the Tonle Sap lies a little girl. Her name was Dang Thy, and even as she was bleeding to death from the bullet in her waist, she asked about the health of her mother, who was also dying from gunshot wounds following an attack by Khmer Rouge militants in 1998.

Eighteen kidney transplant patients, who are stranded in India after being cheated by Phnom Penh-based Metro RLV Polyclinic, which allegedly absconded with $1 million paid by them, are pleading with Prime Minister Hun Manet to intervene in their case.

Living in a small concrete house with his wife and two young children, one kilometer away from Takhmao Bridge, ex-Giant Ibis Transportation employee Or Chanthy, 45, contemplates life’s challenges. In 2020, Chanthy, a union member, was among 80 bus drivers who were made redundant without severance and seniority payment when the company suspended operations during the Covid-19 outbreak. Severance and seniority payments are compulsory under the Labor Law.

The Regional Court of Appeal has dropped the charges against activist Chhorn Phalla in Ratanakiri province last week for allegedly clearing state forest land, as opposition party Candlelight urged the new government to release its party members and other prisoners of conscience, who were allegedly detained on politically motivated charges.

Imprisoned American Moved to Phnom Penh Jail After U.S. Resumes Aid to Cambodia

The Cambodian government has transferred an imprisoned Cambodian American human rights advocate Seng Theary to a jail in Phnom Penh where she can more easily communicate with her legal team, according to her lawyer. She was relocated one day after the U.S. government told Prime Minister Hun Manet that it would reinstate $18 million in aid to Cambodia.
